SAAR’s Position on the Desert Discovery Center

The Scottsdale Area Association of REALTORS®’ Board of Directors and Government Affairs Committee take positions of support on policies, projects, and development which promote the best “quality of life” for our communities. As REALTORS®, we know that when our community is in harmony, the housing market is maintained, community aesthetics are preserved, career opportunities grow, and government revenue for public amenities and services is increased.

The DDC educational/interpretive center concept has been a part of community conversations for more than 30 years. Early Preserve discussions include City planning documents and publications dating back to the McDowell Mountain Task Force in 1993. Several City Council actions over the past 20 years have acknowledged or accepted reports locating the DDC at the Gateway to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Over the past 20 years the DDC concept has been discussed in numerous City meetings, open houses and community conversations. The concept has evolved from that of a basic information center into a global center focused on tourism, research, education and policies regarding sustainable living in arid environments.

SAAR supports the City Council’s decision to move forward with the current Feasibility Study which will result in a proposal for review, prior to moving onto any next steps of the process. Our continued support will hinge on the conclusion of the 18-month study which will define the areas necessary to make an informed decision such as scope, exhibitory, size, architectural renderings, cost, operating budget, revenue sources, etc.
